The NLR (Netherlands Aerospace Centre) is looking for a new and enthusiastic colleague and PhD candidate for our VCNS Noise Synthesis Tool. The Virtual Community Noise Simulator (VCNS) is an innovation to support airport communities and other stakeholders who want to experience aircraft noise in their own environment.

This joint NLR – TU Delft project aims at improving and further developing the VCNS system, such that it becomes applicable to a wider range of aircraft types, both for aircrafts currently in operation as well as future aircraft that are being designed now, e.g. aircraft equipped with counter-rotating open rotor (CROR) engines.

The job
You will investigate the possibility to improve the source signal generator of the VCNS by using scaled wind tunnel data and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. In addition, the propagation module of the VCNS needs to be extended in order to be able to apply it in 3D situations (urban environments).

Our goal is to excel in research. The research will lead to a PhD dissertation as well as a number of scientific publications within a 4 year period.

• Finished (Research) Master e.g. aerospace engineering, applied physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering;
• A combination of good mathematical/analytical skills and Engineering;
• A strong interest in performing field experiments is required;
• Advanced programming skills are advantageous for this position;
• Inspiring discussion partner and team player;
• Excellent in speaking and writing in English and preferably Dutch.

Our offer
You will be employed by NLR as a PhD candidate. NLR offers you a 4-year research contract, as well as the opportunity to build a professional network in aerospace.

As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the Graduate School of TU Delft, providing an inspiring research environment, i.e. an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. Further, the Graduate School offers a Doctoral Education Programme aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
